She studies how ritual, festivity, and temporary structures operate as pedagogical tools and as strategies for envisioning future possibilities across urban, rural, and remote landscapes. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges architectural assemblies, ecology, landscape studies, the social sciences, and art history. She previously served as an Adjunct at the Syracuse University School of Architecture. Palladino holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Architecture from Politecnico di Milano, with professional experience in Italy, Spain, and Portugal. She graduated with distinction from the Master in Design Studies (Ecologies) at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where she received the Ermenegildo Zegna Fellowship and served as a Teaching Fellow in the Department of History of Art &amp; Architecture. Institution:&nbsp; Politecico di Milano Team: Rosita Palladino,Beatrice Carraro, Nicolò Buizza, Gregorio Minelli, Alessandro Pasero, Pietro Rava, Giada Zuan Old rituals are still ringing in the primitive, volcanic land of Lanzarote. In ancient times, the indigenous manifested their sacred virtue by using the archetypes of the efquene and tagoror, ritual fences, placed around an idol as thresholds to access a magical and defended habitat. Today, this ancient ritual’s memory allows reflections on the contemporary relationship between humans, time, and environment. The island’s region of mataburros, where the wind erodes these fragile whinstones, becomes ideal for expressing the project’s meaning. This land’s weakness is a metaphor for a condition to preserve, as an imminent future where the few natural resources will be too precious. The sacred fence closes around one of the whinstones, destined to disappear. A natural alcove created by the wind, protects an egg, a as a symbol of fertility, life, and eternal. Every sacred space has its ceremonies: all the devotees move in it as dancing, a cathartic circular choreography to be dared to meet God. The holiness of this land was written and celebrated by the aboriginals who identified several ethereal scenes, observed through the centuries by poets, architects, and movie directors, who tried to encapsulate its beauty and drama in their art. Indeed the project aims to identify a new possible scenario for a rite to celebrate a more actual vision of the environment: ephemeral and fragile. In «A Fence To Stop Time» space takes shape as a distant habitat, crossable by twelve trilithium, arranged with soft curtains. The wind that gives life and dynamism to the enclosure consumes and dissolves its idol. The fence is built by tracing a circle and divided into four parts, and each of it is in three sections (4x3, pic c.). Twelve symbolizes the recomposition of the primordial wholeness. In other terms, it represents the descent to earth of a cosmic model of thoroughness and harmony. The meaning of this number indicates the conclusion of a completed cycle; it is the symbol of the paramount initiatory test that allows to pass from an ordinary plane to a higher, sacred one. Globalization, new media, climate change, and the issues of our contemporary are overwriting the anthropological value of our existence, and therefore of our projects. «Other metaphors» is a challenge that accepts failure and does not pretend to give answers but wants to recover that time of reflection and criticism that especially new generations can intercept. Eataly promotes the project in collaboration with the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity and the support of the Municipality of Milan. Designed by the architect Davide Fabio Colaci with students of the Politecnico di Milano and the garden designer Dario Valenti, it donates a field full of flowers and plants that stimulate the urban biodiversity of the city. «PRATOFIORITO» is an installation made with an embank that holds a garden with mixed species of flowers, plants, and elements related to the «Bee the future» network. The flowered enclosed by a bench; it surrounds a small protected arena for outdoor activities addressed to kindergartens and elementary schools. Education plays a crucial role in the awareness about the bees’ significance for environmental wellbeing. The purpose of Eataly is to bring back biodiversity in the urban areas through a three-year commitment to the reforestation of 100 hectares with flowers loved by bees (Calendula / Mustard / Flax / Mallow) since we must remind that «To make a seed you need a bee!».&nbsp;The project includes a candy distributor for organic seeds, financed by the company «Arcoiris» to encourage people to take small actions as planting a flower on their terrace; it is a simple as essential tool to help bees come again to the cities. Likewise, the project is a tool for new ways of reactivating and populating urban voids enjoying the outdoor space, although in the middle of dense urbanization as in Milan. The arena placed in the middle of the embank is designed for the educational purpose of «PRATOFIORITO»; the seats and the circular shape give new points of view on the garden, allowing children to learn about flowers composition. Ottolini The research aims to discover the Amalfi Coast’s multiple features to unfold the territory’s canonical image commonly associated with seaside tourism. By systematizing the different scenarios of this place, it is possible to rediscover a historical and naturalistic complexity that has been neglected over the decades in favor of an exploration limited to the coast. In bringing to light some of the unknown pieces, we find Tramonti, one of the under-appreciated villages with great potential in the Amalfi Coast hinterland. Only 7 kilometers from the coast, perched in the Monti Lattari park, Tramonti remains progressively excluded from the lure of the other Unesco destinations: Amalfi, Ravello, and Positano. The research intends to decode the causes that have led to the progressive underutilization of territorial capital and to find n Tramonti’s archaeology a narrative on which to base its development. To uncover the history and traditions of this rural village, the support of the Acarbio NGO and Tramonti citizens was essential. production to be plundered and commodified continues to disrupt the deep complex processes of nature leading to major environmental and health ramifications. The climate crisis is symptomatic of this prejudice where the power of a select few humans rises above others and their non-human counterparts, corralled into disciplinary regimes of work valued through distinct economic imperatives. The European energy crisis worsened by the Russian ban over the export of gas, brought Italy to speculate on reopening Sardinia’s carbon mines and restarting negotiations with Algeria for the project GALSI (Algeria-Sardinia-Italia Gas-pipeline): one more pipeline in the cruelest trait of Mediterraneum, crossed by thousands of migrants [STATELESS]. Yet, the national energetic necessity is only the trigger that exposed what has been obscured for decades: the still visible effects of the “Sardinian Issue”. The term was coined by Gian Battista Tuveri (1815-1887), a theorist of Italian federalism. It underlines that the economic underdevelopment and systematic poverty are attributable to centuries of colonial interests due to Sardinia’s strategic location in the Mediterranean sea. The Sardinian issue has to be integrated with a dispute for independence, which was always neglected. Thus, «Sardigna no est Italia» became the ideal motto for the island’s condition. Mineral extraction and still unrecovered soil contamination are just the beginning of complex analyses on power structures. If, in contemporary times, the exploitation of Sardinia started during the late XIX century Grand Tour, the more relevant colonial interest became crucial during the twenty years of Fascism (1922-1943). Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) founded three cities: Fertilia, Arborea, and Carbonia, whose history is unknown outside the island’s borders: supposedly they are rehearsals of his colonial ambitions in Africa. Those city names, are not aimless; toponymy was used as a subtle form of power over the landscape. The first two project seek recovery marches for dairy and agricultural production, and the latter to boost carbon extraction in the South [MILK ISSUE, ARBOREA, CARBONIA]. The Fascist project incentivized migration to Sardinia, but the mining dream failed with the end of the autarky. In the 1960s, the economic boom transformed the beautiful North-East area into the perfect touristic destination. A lack of territorial regulations and economic interests transformed the coastline in the locations for second houses and overscaled hotels [ECOMOSTRI]. In the 1970s, two large-scale power plants colonized the island, 1/4 of Italian coal-fired power stations are in Sardinia [ENERGY?]. Finally, in the last years, many protests against Sardinia’s condition occurred. Some demanded a market to include traditional diary production annihilated by the industrial ones, and others asked for the truth about the weapons experimentation compromising the island’s ecosystem Advisor: Malkit Shoshan Brief: The developments that led to the splitting of the atom are perhaps the best manifestation of both the opportunities and the existential threats associated with technological advancement—especially when unchecked. Nuclear technology reminds us that human survival on earth is not a given, as humans have become dangerous not only to themselves, but to the entire biosphere.2This essay provides an overview of a semester-long collaborative effort, in conversation with the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, to develop creative, artistic and activist perspectives to look at the wide spectrum of the “nuclear dilemma”, including the risks associated with the use of nuclear weapons and their testing to the critiques surrounding nuclear energy as well as the human rights and exclusionary implications of nuclear technologies. Stitching Atomic Narratives examines and brings together three exclusion zones – Sardigna in Italy, and Kozloduy and Belene in Bulgaria – in an attempt to unfold the blurred entanglement between nuclear technology and its geo-political and socio-cultural agents. The project asks to what degree it is possible to trace a network of interconnected patches related to nuclear technology, simultaneously focusing on micro and macro aspects of the issue. Our motivation is to center different peripheries: on the one hand in terms of global international relations, and on the other hand on a local level – since all three regions we are looking at have been historically neglected within their respective locales. In addition to studying the specific sites and agents they have interacted with, we also aim to recognize the spaces in between those entanglements, or between what has been documented and what has been left unseen. Through centering this tension, we ultimately make the invisible visible, and give voice to people and places which have not necessarily had such agency before. The desired effect of this effort is to foster a sense of empathy both within the studied geographies and beyond. By learning about similarly affected exclusion zones, members of the individual communities will recognize themselves in a broader narrative; this empathy, however, also transcends relation and goes beyond self-recognition, as will be the case with publics seemingly not directly affected by the issues at hand. The project interacts with audiences on several distinct, but also interconnected levels: we start from studying the local, then zoom out to trace its global entanglements, and finally return to the microcosmic with newfound awareness. Closely related to the examined territories yet observing them from afar, we hope to share our findings with groups unfamiliar with these histories, but also hope to bring a sense of empowerment to the communities we have borrowed experience and knowledge from. Our methodology for gathering and organizing data was strongly inspired by “Patchy Anthropocene: Landscape Structure, Multispecies History, and the Retooling of Anthropology” by Anna Tsing, Andrew S. Mathews, and Nils Bubandt – “a conceptual tool for noticing landscape structure, with special attention to what we call ‘modular simplifications’ and ‘feral proliferations.’” To reveal a network of interconnected systems that form an overarching structure of nuclear power, we mapped a series of geo-political entanglements stemming from the three sites, lines of material flow, and networks of nuclear infrastructure and technology. Enveloping all of these elements is a layer which we have called the “placenta” – or all that underlies what is seemingly known. These layers are collapsed onto one another to form a map of patches unraveled and re-stitched. The archival object materializes the discovered interconnections and everything in between. This portable ever-growing archive exists in the form of a suitcase filled with maps, diagrams, text documents, photographs, and objects connected to nuclear power’s presence in and influence on the studied territories. The artefacts are treated as a travelling lawsuit, with the three researched locations acting as illustrative case studies; the additional entangled sites we have mapped out form the itinerary the suitcase passes through and is activated in.
